1966 saw 5 hikes leave Camp Sheppard:2 - Soughdough Loop hikes through the NE corner of Mt. Rainier National Park1 - 102 mile Wonderland Plus hike around Mt. Rainier on the Wonderland Trail1 - Climb of Rainier via the Camp Schurman route with a group of 241 - Pacific Cascade Crest Trail hike from Blowout Mt. to Chinook Pass |
The first trip, a Sourdough Loop had but two clients, Scott Mason and Cliff Mason. Scott returned the next year to be a staff member. The trip was led by Don Wilson and Doug Driscoll. Much of the food was canned, and heavy. Bill Rengstorf and Bill Nelson, also staff members did support work for that first trip by making two food drops. As Bill Rengstorf says, "The first trip had lots of cans in the pack . . but they sure ate good."
