The purpose of Instructor In Training (IIT) Orientations is to provide an fun and exciting method for those interested in applying for a seasonal CSHAB Instructor position to become familiar with the HA Base program and to assist the seasonal HA staff to deliver the program to the trekkers.

IIT Duties-

IITs will serve in a staff learning/support role and will not be required to teach. Assignments could include assisting with gear staging, food preparation, trekker logistics, clean up and other tasks directed by the Base Director and Program Director. A portion of the weekend will be reserved for using mountain bikes to conduct trailhead and trail maintenance surveys and familiarization.

Age 16 - 20
Current BSA Registration
Minimum participation of one weekend

Application Process
Deliver a completed staff application to the HA Program Advisor or Base Director at least 2 weeks prior to arrival at Sheppard Base.

Weeklong orientations are also available depending on IIT interest and availability.
Contact Base Director, Pat Tobin, at 1-360- 663 2223 and ptobin@seattlebsa.org no later then a Monday before an arrival to schedule an IIT Orientation for the following weekend or upcoming weeks.

Although not necessary, it’s recommended that IIT’s attend orientations together to increase learning and camaraderie. IITs will not ride mountain bikes away from Sheppard Base without adult leadership.

Mountain Bike in good working order geared for cross-country. Front suspension is highly recommended. Toe clips are not recommended. Clip-less pedals are optional.

Weeklong sessions include more projects, trail food packaging and trail surveys.

Getting to Sheppard Base:
Drive Maple Valley Hyway 169 from Renton to Enumclaw and the intersection of Chinook Pass Hyway 410. Then south on Hyway 410 for 27 miles (or 10 miles beyond Greenwater) towards Crystal Mt. to Camp Sheppard. Watch for the Camp Sheppard sign on the on the left.
