The Trek
For those looking for more than a walk in the park, the Northern Loop is a hike in wonderland. Imagine a
week of stunning views near Mt. Rainier. The Northern Loop Trail will take you to places many hikers
have only dreamed about in Mt. Rainier National Park. This trek is one of our long time favorites because it’s in the park and one of the most popular 50-milers in Washington. There’s nothing like this very special area and yet so close to Camp Sheppard.

This trek will introduce younger scouts, beginning at age 13, to our exciting high adventure program. We include Leave No Trace camping and cooking, map, compass and GPS instruction, some cross country hiking, problem solving, exploration, merit badge work, Ranger Award experience, patrol building, individual recognition and excitement. This specialized experience will prepare young trekkers to return to our high adventure base for even greater challenges. We’re going, Let’s hike!

Note: This is a challenging trek and should not be attempted unless trekkers are in good physical condition. Backcountry fires are not permitted and camping is by permit only on a first-come, first-served basis. If we do not receive a permit because of high demand, we will use the scenic Norse Peak Wilderness with Pacific Crest Trail as a worthy alternate.

Suggested physical training before the trek: Cardio-vascular exercise such as hiking with a loaded pack, biking, running and weight training.
