Sample Itinerary

Monday – 11 miles Hiking
Breakfast, break camp then hike (8.5 mi.) to Airplane Meadows (5800’) for lunch. Hike (2.5 mi.) to Echo Lake trail camp (3900’). Instruction: Camp site selection and prep plus tarp pitching. Dinner. Instruction - Wilderness survival and Search and Rescue procedures. Free time and campfire.

Tuesday – 14 miles Hiking
Breakfast, break camp, hike (4 mi.) to Corral Pass (5700’) for a view of Mt. Rainier and rest stop. Continue on (5 mi.) to Ranger Creek Shelter (4800’) for lunch. Continue (5 mi.) down to Lower Ranger Creek campsite (2700’). Make camp, dinner, free time and campfire.

Wednesday – 6 miles Mountain Biking & 3 mi Cross Country Hiking
Breakfast, break camp, hike 1⁄2 mile to Snoquera Flats trailhead (2400’), meet bus and transition from backpacks to mountain bikes. Instruction- Mountain Bike Basics. Ride Skookum Flats Trail 6 miles to FS Road 73 (2200’). Meet bus for lunch and 7 mi. shuttle ride up to Eleanor Ridge trailhead (4300’). Instruction: Map, compass, GPS and route finding. Navigate on old logging road and ridgeline into Lake Eleanor camp (5000’), Mt. Rainier Nat’l Park. Make camp, dinner and free time.

Thursday – 16 miles Hiking
Breakfast, break camp hike (9.2 mi.) through Grand Park and Berkely Park up to Frozen Lk. (6700’).
Take side trail (2.6 mi RT) to view Mt. Freemont Lookout (7200’) for lunch. Continue down (1.1mi.) to
Sunrise Visitor Center (6400’) then down (3.1 mi.) to White River Campground. (4300’). Make camp,
dinner, free time and campfire.

Friday – 10 miles Hiking and Glacier Climbing
Breakfast, hike (3.7 mi) up through Glacier Basin to the base of Inter Glacier (7000’). Instruction: Plant and animal identification. Rope up and put on crampons for 2500’climb up Inter Glacier to the top of Steamboat Prow (9700’) and Camp Schurman Mountain Ranger Hut (9500’). Instruction: Knots, rope handling, hardware, signals, crampon & ice axe use, self arrest, glacier travel, hazards, steep snow slopes, energy conservation, Rest break at Camp Curtis, arrive at Ranger Hut and group picture. Descend back out to White River Camp.

Option - Stay at campground for 2nd night or take bus ride back to Base for clean up, lodge dinner, cracker barrel and overnight in Base hut. Dinner, campfire and free time.

Saturday – Rappelling and Bouldering
Breakfast, Instruction: Knots, rope handling, hardware, signals and belaying. 30-minute bus ride to Ranger Rock trailhead (2800’). Hike 1⁄4 mile with daypacks to Ranger Rock (3200’) Instruction: Anchors, belaying and rappelling. Practice rappelling techniques. Lunch, 45-minute bus ride to Boulder Alley at Cayuse Pass (4700’). Instruction: Belaying and rock climbing techniques then bus ride back to Sheppard Base. Turn in gear, clean up, BBQ dinner, recognition ceremony and group picture. Local trekkers leave for home. Free time and cracker barrel. Guests are invited to our 5 PM all-you-can-eat chicken BBQ and awards ceremony for $5 per person. They should inform Base in advance of arrival please.

Sunday - Bus to Sea-Tac. Early breakfast, leave Base in time for scheduled flights.
