Guidelines for the 2008 Fall Application Process for
2008-09 School Year Scholarship

Each year, a number of scholarships are awarded in amounts up to $25,000. Applicants must demonstrate performance suitable to be invited as a staff member for the next summer staff season. Once applications are submitted the Camp Sheppard High Adventure Base Program Committee will verify all appropriate information, including the applicant’s performance and enrollment plans. Applications will then be evaluated by members of the Max Eckenburg Trust. Applications are due September 12.

REQUIREMENT I
Applicant must be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America while on staff and through the entire scholarship period.

REQUIREMENT II
Applicant must currently have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.75 to apply and must maintain this grade point average through the Spring Semester of 2008. A selected Scholar must also maintain this average during the entire scholarship period (through June 2009). Please attach a copy of your entire transcripts (unofficial versions are acceptable). Send them along with your application. Application must be RECEIVED at the Max Eckenburg Trust office no later than September 12, 2008.

REQUIREMENT III
Applicant must fully complete the Eckenburg Merit Scholarship Award Application, serve as a Camp Sheppard High Adventure Base Staff member for one summer, pass the pre-screening stage, interview at Camp Sheppard and be selected by the Board. Listed below are guidelines and information for this requirement. (Do not send any attachments other than those requested.)

1. Applicant must be a Camp Staff member with the Chief Seattle Council, Boy Scouts of America’s Sheppard High Adventure Base for at least one summer between June and August and 2008.

2. Applicants must hold a high school diploma or GED. The applicant’s current high school or college GPA must be a minimum of 2.75. This average must be maintained to re-apply for and receive the Scholarship again.

3. The application packets must be RECEIVED by the Max Eckenburg Trust, 821 Laurel Way, Edmonds WA 98020 by September 12, 2008.at 5:00 p.m.

4. Applicants must notify the Max Eckenburg Trust, 821 Laurel Way, Edmonds WA 98020 in writing by July 1st, 2008 of intent to apply so an interview may be scheduled. Interviews will take place at Camp Sheppard while the applicant is serving on the CSHAB Staff. You must physically be at Camp Sheppard to interview. You will be contacted with the confirmation of the date and time of your scheduled interview.

5. Recommendations need to come from four people not related to the applicant: One from a Scout leader, one from the Base Director where you served, one academic authority and one other person of your choice. These recommendations should be returned to you in a sealed envelope and submitted with the entire completed application to the Max Eckenburg Trust and must be RECEIVED in the Trust office no later than Sept. 12, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. This part takes the most amount of time. Give those recommending you plenty of lead time to get their assessment of you completed. It is your responsibility to secure your recommendations to submit with your application.

6. Merit applicants compete in a competitive process for selection with consideration given to attitude, leadership, performance, community service, BSA involvement, personal initiative and their interview. Applicants will be notified of their selection no later than September 30, 2008.

7. Awards are merit-based and candidates enter an objective and subjective competitive application process as prescribed by the Scholarship Board.

8. Termination of a High Adventure Staff member with the Chief Seattle Council, by either party, voids all obligations to provide the Eckenburg Merit Scholarship Award.

9. The Eckenburg Merit Scholarship Award is non transferable and can only be used in the Fall of 2008 through the Spring of 2009 semesters.

The Chief Seattle Council, Camp Sheppard High Adventure Base is under no obligation to offer Eckenburg Merit Scholarship recipients a leadership position or even a contract. The Eckenburg Scholarship Board does not guarantee applicants a scholarship regardless of their service to the Chief Seattle Council, Camp Sheppard High Adventure Base.

REQUIREMENT IV
Ten hours of Community Service must be completed between January 1, 2008 and September 12, 2008. Service hours must be performed outside the Camp Sheppard perimeter, i.e. trail maintenance, tree planting, search and rescue, volunteer fire service, etc.
